By the late 1980s the Spix’s Macaw was doomed to extinction. When I arrived at Loro Parque as Curator in 1989 they had a pair and this sparked a passion to help save the species, which was down to a handful of individuals and one lone survivor in the wild. With various government agencies and the support of Loro Parque, Juan Villalba Macias and me created what would be the species lifeline: a coordinated breeding program.
