Wheel spiders weigh less than a paperclip, but don’t be fooled by their minute size. While this native wheel spider is only two centimetres long, it specialises in hunting on the upper, steeper dune slopes. The hairs on its legs allow it to detect even the smallest vibrations in the sand, helping it to locate prey with ease. Once close enough, it pounces, sinking its fangs and allowing the venom to liquefy the beetle’s insides, leaving only the outer shell behind. Watch Africa’s Wild Geniuses, F
